Raise the Trophy!

When the FIFA World Cup arrives in San Francisco in June 2026, fans from across the globe will turn their attention to the pitch to watch some of the best fútbol seen this year.

104 matches later, one team will inspire an entire country as they lift the FIFA World Cup Trophy in celebration of the ultimate victory. Tears will fly. Strangers will hug. Flags will wave.

And, somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Biros will be watching the party at MetLife Stadium, paying special attention to the trophy as it’s passed from teammate to teammate, coach to coach.

See, the Biros have a special interest in the trophies won by the world’s best athletes at the height of their sport and know what it takes to keep those treasures in the best shape.

After all, these trophies aren’t static. They are lifted in celebration, transported internationally, engraved repeatedly, and passed from team to team over generations. That ongoing use creates wear that must be carefully managed if the trophy is to remain structurally sound and visually consistent.

At Biro & Sons, we specialize in trophy restoration, silver repair, and the long-term preservation of sporting silver used in international competition.

Trophy Restoration As Part Of The Lifecycle Of Sport

Sporting trophies are designed to be used, not stored. Over time, that use naturally leads to surface wear, dents, and loss of fine detail. Engraved lettering can soften, and structural components can become stressed through repeated handling and travel.

Our approach to trophy restoration focuses on preserving the original object while restoring its function and appearance. This includes structural repair, surface restoration, silver replating where required, and careful preservation of engraved detail. We do not aim to remake trophies. We aim to maintain them so they can continue as the symbol of a champion.

Working On The America’s Cup

One of the most significant trophies we have worked on is the America’s Cup, widely regarded as the oldest and most prestigious trophy in international sport. Because it is actively used, transported, and displayed around the world, it undergoes a level of handling that few historical objects endure. That constant movement, combined with its age, makes ongoing care and expert restoration essential to preserving its condition.

When the Cup first came to us following the 33rd America’s Cup in 2010, it required a highly controlled and methodical approach. The piece had to be carefully disassembled to evaluate both its surface condition and its internal structure. Working under close supervision, each component was examined, cleaned, and restored with precision, ensuring no original detail was lost.

Beyond surface restoration, our work included reinforcing the Cup’s structural integrity to better support its continued use. Adjustments were made to improve stability and make future assembly more secure, all while respecting the original craftsmanship. Every intervention is carried out with restraint and accuracy so the trophy remains both functional and historically intact, preserving its legacy for future competitions.

The Triple Crown Trophy Project

We were also involved in a major collaborative project connected to the Triple Crown Trophy in horse racing. The original project, led by sculptor Roberto Santo in partnership with the New York Racing Association, brought together multiple specialists in sculpture, fabrication, and silversmithing.

Our role came during the final stage of the process, where we assembled and finished the trophies. This required bringing together multiple crafted components and materials into a unified finished object suitable for presentation.

The project reflects how modern sporting trophies are often the result of collaboration across disciplines, with silversmithing playing a key role in their final execution.

Why Trophy Restoration Matters

Beyond major commissions, we work on a wide range of sporting and ceremonial silver, including regatta trophies, golf awards, institutional silver, and corporate presentation pieces.

Many of these are used annually, which means they require ongoing maintenance rather than one-time repair. Common issues include wear from handling, surface dulling from repeated polishing, and gradual loss of engraved detail.

Trophy restoration ensures these objects remain consistent with their history while continuing to function in active sporting and ceremonial use.

Why This Matters During The World Cup In San Francisco

Global events like the World Cup highlight the importance of the objects that represent victory. While attention is focused on the matches, trophies, and ceremonial silver must meet a consistent standard wherever they appear.

Even when trophies are not created locally, they are part of a global system of care that ensures they remain in proper condition throughout their lifecycle. Our role is to support that system through expert restoration and silversmithing.

San Francisco Silversmithing And Sporting Heritage

We are a silversmith workshop rooted in traditional craft, working at the intersection of heritage and modern sport. Our focus is on preserving sporting silver through careful restoration and repair that respects original craftsmanship.

From the America’s Cup to collaborative projects like the Triple Crown Trophy commission, our work ensures that some of the world’s most important trophies remain part of ongoing sporting history.

Preserving Sporting Trophies Through Silversmithing Craft

Sport creates the moment, but trophies carry it forward. They are handled, engraved, repaired, and passed through generations as living records of achievement.

Trophy restoration allows those objects to continue that journey. Through careful silversmithing, we preserve both the structure and the story behind each piece.

As the World Cup arrives in San Francisco, it is a reminder that behind every trophy is a craft dedicated to making sure history can continue to be held in the hand.
